Information for potential Students

Who: Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. Most are recent graduates from a UK university, although others may have graduated ten or twenty years earlier. All students are expected to be holders of a good degree from a recognised university - and overseas graduates must have a full working knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Students on the 9 month evening course are often in full-time employment.

Where: On average, 70% of our intake come from the UK, 15% from other EU countries and 7% from other English-speaking countries. The balance come from all over the world.

What: Teaching takes place at the School's premises in London, and consists of lecture sessions, small group tutorial sessions, and personal study and research assignments. For a fully detailed syllabus, click here for the London courses or here for the online course.

How: The lectures, given throughout the course, cover all aspects of the theory and practice of journalism. Each student is allocated to a small group and each group is allocated to a personal tutor, who works with the group to help each individual build a portfolio which can be used as a show-case to a prospective employer. Your assignments and portfolio work are graded throughout the course, and there are a series of exams in the final week.

The course also includes a two-day QuarkXPress course (certificated separately)

Attendance: (weekly)

3 Month Course 3 days' attendance plus personal tutorial plus 15/20 hours' research and writing
6 Month Course 2 days' attendance plus personal tutorial (every other week) plus 8/10 hours' research and writing
9 Month Course 1 or 2 evenings per week, tutorial (every third week) plus 5/7 hours' research and writing
(24 month)
Online Course 1 lecture (3 weeks out of 4 ) plus tutorial once a month and 3/4 hours' research and writing

Working: We would advise you not to have a part-time job while taking the 3 month course. The 6 month course requires half the time commitment of the 3 month course and we would suggest that you do not to commit to a job which requires more than 20 hours' work a week.

Accommodation: The School does not provide any accommodation facilities - students are required to make their own arrangements. On request we can send enquirers a fact sheet with information on places that students have found satisafctory in the past.

Funding: The majority of our students fund this course from their own resources - some have been working full time, some are supported by their bank manager, and others are supported by their parents.
